The Mardi Himal Trek with Annapurna Base Camp and Khopra Dada Khayar Lake Trek is an exhilarating journey that combines two popular Annapurna region trekking routes, including the Khopra Ridge and the Khayar Lake trek. Since the itinerary allows you to reach the foothills of Mardi Himal (5587 m) at an elevation of 4500 m and Mt. Annapurna (8091 m) at an altitude of 4130 m, respectively, it offers greater opportunities to explore the region’s natural grandeur and awe-inspiring landscapes ranging from lush dense forests to alpine meadows. Although Adventure Treks Nepal has different packages for the Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Trek, this 24-day package with a strategically planned itinerary lets you explore broadly.

What are the highlights of the Mardi Himal Trek with Annapurna Base Camp and Khopra Dada Khayar Lake Trek?

The trek that starts officially from Phedi showcases surprises at every step while walking towards Mardi Himal or towards the higher Khayar Lake. Let’s discuss key aspects of this journey that make your 2026/2027 more worthwhile.

Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500 m)

Among youths from all over the world, Mardi Himal Base Camp is gaining popularity as one of the best trekking destinations due to its proximity to Pokhara city and the fact that it can be done within a week. Trekkers feel like they are doing a mini mountain expedition while climbing towards the Base Camp, and it has become an alternative to Annapurna Base Camp, as trekkers can savor the charm of spectacular scenes with fewer crowds in a serene environment.

Adventurers love to walk through dense woodlands filled with blooming rhododendrons and quaint settlements. As the trails are more well-marked, trekkers generally also choose this destination during the winter season in order to play in the snow.

Annapurna Base Camp (4130 m)

After spending a wonderful night at the Mardi Himal Base Camp and crossing beautiful villages such as Landruk, Chhomrong, and Jhinu Danda, the trail takes you to the lower slopes of Mt. Annapurna, the 10th-highest mountain in the world. You will have a sense of achievement while standing in a landscape of elevation of 4130 m, encompassed by towering Annapurna Mountain ranges, after a struggle on rugged terrain, following the legendary mountaineers.

Khopra Ridge (3650 m) and Khayar Lake

Khopra Ridge is one of the less-explored trekking areas in the Annapurna region, usually known for its extensive views of snow-clad mountains. On the way to the Khopra ridge, several locals are running teahouses to serve trekkers. Since the Khayar Lake is located at an elevation of 4665 m to 6-7  km away in the northeast of Khopra ridge, hikers go on a side hike to it by gaining 1000 m, as this crystal-clear glacier lake is a spiritual site. Trekkers might love camping near the lake due to the peaceful and dramatic atmosphere.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Station (3210 m)

Ghorepani is the most chosen route for a spectacular sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges by novice trekkers due to its less difficult trail. Since it is achievable within 4 to 6 days without more physical strain, it has become a more cost-effective and family-friendly destination. You will enjoy walking through blooming rhododendrons while immersing yourself in the cultural heritages of local ethnic groups.

What unique cultural experience will you have on the Mardi Himal Trek with Annapurna Base Camp and Khopra Dada Khayar Lake Trek 24 Days?

During these 24 days, learn about the cultures and traditions of the Gurung and Magar communities, influenced by Tibetan Buddhism in higher settlements and also by Hindu Brahmin/Chhetri communities in lower elevations. Mainly in Landruk and Chhomrong, you will gain a deep insight into Gurung culture through the history shared by locals and their traditional attire. Along the route to Ghorepani and Khopra Ridge, you will learn about the Magar community. Unique customs, jewelry, folk music, rituals, festivals, and living style captivate you the most. While traversing Tadapani, Swanta, and Deurali, observe stone houses and terraced fields, which showcase the living ways of remote areas in the Annapurna region.

Your guide helps you to communicate with locals as they use their own dialect. While exploring such traditional villages, you can see traditional crafts and arts by locals preserved for centuries. On your welcome, they might perform cultural dances to folk music and also share the history through storytelling. While trekking during the spring or autumn season, you can get involved in their festive activities when the inhabitants’ festivals, such as Dashain, Tihar, and Lhosar, take place. At many places, the stupas, temples, and gompas decorated with prayer flags and mani walls represent the reflection of both Buddhism and Hinduism.

What mountain views and wildlife will be seen on the trek?

Since the trek starts from Phedi, you are treated to mountain views occasionally. Once you reach Low Camp, the scenery becomes more vibrant, while the experience from High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp cannot be expressed in words. Main mountains seen on the Mardi Himal Trek with Annapurna Base Camp and Khopra Dada Khayar Lake Trek are Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna II (7,937 m), Annapurna III (7,955 m), Gangapurna (7,454 m), Annapurna South (7,219 m), Machhapuchhre/Fishtail (6,993 m), Hiunchuli (6,441 m), Nilgiri Peaks (7,061 m), Dhaulagiri I (8,167 m), Tukuche Peak (6,920 m), Mardi Himal (5,587 m), and Tent Peak (5,695 m).

How much does the Mardi Himal Trek with Annapurna Base Camp and Khopra Dada Khayar Lake Trek cost?

The exact cost for any trekking cannot be mentioned, as it totally depends on the chosen package, accommodation, travel ways/vehicles, guides, porters, duration, and length of the trekking. Since trekking companies such as local, national, and international ones are serving tourists in Nepal, choosing locals can be cheaper than choosing international ones. Similarly, teahouses also range from simple to premium with more advanced facilities.'The package also includes all hiking permits, a porter and guide price with insurance, three meals throughout the trek, only breakfast in Pokhara, and some trekking gear.

International airfare, travel insurance, Nepal entry visa, main meals in cities (Pokhara), tips for guides and porters, additional foods (drink, juice, mineral water, and juice), additional services at teahouses (heater charge and hot shower), and some trekking necessities (sleeping bag and down jacket) are all out of your pocket.Adjust to common teahouses by making compromises on basic services and meals in order to avoid incurring additional costs beyond the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking from Pokhara. To save paying for a porter, carry your own backpack while trekking.

Essential Information

What is the opimtal period for the Mardi Himal Trek with Annapurna Base Camp and Khopra Dada Khayar LakeTrek?

Trekking to both base camps of Mt. Mardi and Annapurna is possible in all months of the year due to their properly marked routes and moderate difficulty level. However, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October) are the most preferred trekking seasons in Nepal because of pleasant weather and mild temperatures. The journey becomes more comfortable and secure on dry trails than on the muddy and icy terrain of off-seasons (monsoon and winter). All the equipment you carry and clothing layers might not work all the time, as the risks will be higher during the heavy rains and harsh colds. Accordingly, we advise you to avoid trekking in these months for well-being.

While a high acute sickness takes place in high elevations, temperature also drops to freezing, creating cold-related health issues such as frostbite and hypothermia. As a result, selecting blooming times—spring and festive months like autumn can be an ideal time for all kinds of trekkers. Although the journey spans more than three weeks, trekkers feel enjoyment at every section of the trek when nature lets them savor its charm without obstruction as the sky gets clearer and the fragrance of wildflowers refreshes their mood all the time. Luckily, If you embark on this trip during the festive season, you can even participate in festive activities.

What trekking permits do you need for the Mardi Himal Trek with Annapurna Base Camp and Khopra Danda Khayar Lake trek?

Legal paper documents for travelling in Nepal are not only about obeying the rules and regulations of tourism but also about guaranteeing your own security throughout the journey. The authorized administrations collect all your personal details along with the detailed itinerary in order to provide instant assistance in emergency cases. The mandatory trekking permits for the Mardi Himal Trek with the Annapurna Base Camp and Khopra Danda Khayar Lake Trek are a TIMS( Trekkers Information Management System) card and an ACAP( Annapurna Conservation Area Project).

Before you arrive, the chosen trekking agency begins processing these papers when you provide all required documents. An expert guide registered with the Nepalese government is also compulsory for any trek. With the purpose of sustainable tourism, these permits are issued to regulate visitor numbers and protect the environment, controlling overtourism. Accordingly, we suggest not harming any vegetation and wildlife to save you from penalties. Trekking permit costs might depend on different trekking companies and citizens; for example, entry permits for citizens from a SAARC country will be more affordable.

Why obtain travel insurance for the Mardi Himal Trek with Annapurna Base Camp and Khopra Dada Khayar Lake Trek?

While traversing several challenging sections, especially near base camps, Khopra Danda, and Khayar Lake, more caution is essential. As there is a saying, “Prevention is better than cure,” attaining travel insurance protects you from budget strains by providing coverage for emergency services, including helicopter evacuation above 4,000 m. If an unexpected event takes place in such rugged mountainous landscapes, trekkers can not take you to the hospital due to the remote topography and fewer health posts with limited services over long distances.

However, an authorized insurance company tracks your trip and arranges a timely rescue, assisting you in avoiding the exorbitant cost of helicopter evacuation at high elevations. All expenses in hospitals for the treatment and other unpredictable incidents, such as trip delays/cancellations and individual equipment loss/damage or theft, will be covered by insurance. Accordingly, select the best insurance, and enjoy a Himalayan adventure without stress.
